Experience as a Substitute English Teacher at a Madrasah Aliyah During University Studies

During my time as a university student, I came to realize the importance of using my time productively—not only in academics, but also in gaining professional experience. One of the most valuable activities I undertook was working as a substitute teacher for English at a Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic senior high school). This opportunity provided me with insights and lessons that extended far beyond the classroom. The opportunity arose unexpectedly through one of my academic advisors. The school was in urgent need of a substitute teacher as the regular English teacher had to take extended leave. With a background in English Education and some experience teaching private lessons, I felt adequately prepared—despite the natural nervousness that accompanied my first day.My responsibilities included planning lessons, delivering instruction, and assessing student performance. I taught two grade levels, with a total of four classes of approximately 30 students each. I employed a communicative approach to teaching, blending traditional methods with interactive techniques. My aim was to make English feel more like a tool for communication than just another school subject.Throughout the assignment, I found myself not only acting as an educator, but also as a facilitator and motivator. I learned to identify different learning styles, tailor lesson delivery accordingly, and manage a classroom with diverse student personalities. These tasks helped strengthen my pedagogical and interpersonal skills, both of which are crucial in the field of education.Furthermore, the environment at the Madrasah Aliyah, rooted in strong Islamic values, enriched my understanding of character-based education. I also received valuable guidance from the school’s permanent teaching staff, who were generous in offering feedback and support. Conversations about curriculum design, assessment techniques, and classroom management gave me a broader, more practical view of educational work.Although my role as a substitute teacher lasted for only a few weeks, the impact on my personal and professional development was profound. I became more confident, more responsive to students’ needs, and increasingly committed to pursuing a career in education
